Is There Such A Thing As Lower Ab Training |
|
Can you isolate and train the lower abs specifically?
Some people say yes, some no. Anatomically speaking there are no major lower abdominal muscles with different attachments from the upper abdominals. However because of the innervation of the rectus abdominus and other muscles certain movements tend to favor the lower abdominal area. While it may not be possible to completely isolate the lower portion of the rectus abdominus performing exercises like reverse crunches, leg lifts, and rollouts is still beneficial. From a functional standpoint good core training is more about training movements rather than muscles. I feel that regardless of your opinion on lower abdominals there's a benefit to performing a variety of exercises that challenge your core in different ways. |
